Menthol cigarettes are known to have a pleasant cooling effect thanks to their menthol components that do not actually chill, but give a chilling effect to the nerve buds of the smoker. The first ever menthol cigarettes were produced by Spud Brand tobacco factory back in 1924, and remained relatively unpopular until 1927, when they were re-launched by Axton-Fisher Tobacco Company under the brand name of Sud Menthol Cool Cigarettes. The history of these cigarettes started progressing by leaps, and in 1950 R.J. Reynolds Company came up with the first menthol filter tips of Salem trade mark.
